Visit to Holton High

This semester has been busy for me. K-State at Salina will have a Digital Media degree option after many, many months of hard work and preparation. I have made several high school visits around the state, hoping to build relationships with area teachers and spread the news about K-State at Salina. Yesterday, I visited Holton High School. As long as I have lived in Kansas, I do not recall ever visiting the city of Holton, however I was pleased with what I found. It is just the right size of community for me, around 3,000 people, with cobblestone streets and big, two story Victorian homes.

Holton High School has a real gem in Tad Hernandez. He teaches digital media technologies, which explains my visit to his school. I became acquainted with Tad because I expressed interest in judging for the Kansas Student Technology Leadership Digital Media Competition. I visited with his video production class, spending a fair amount of time on the free software Alice. I also explained to the students that I believe someone with visual design skills combined with technical skills such as computer programming will be the most marketable. Our new digital media program will reflect that philosophy, combining new media skills with good, old fashioned computer technology skills.

On a related note, I stumbled across Emily Valenza’s blog, and her Silent Films assignment immediately caught my eye. Way to go, Emily! Using digital media with the third graders. I can’t wait to see the results of this effort. I will have to think about her Passion Quilt idea. The concept is fascinating and I couldn’t agree more with her value of risk-taking.
